Hello Gentlemen!

Firstly my apologies RAdmiralRob if my name causes problems, but my interest with HMS Agamemnon goes back along way.... She holds a special affection in my heart, her history and conflicts are second to none for a 64! It appears that i join with more esteemed admirers of this exceptional third rater......

@Lilnap

Im quite an active member of the POBS forum, and i will say this, the dev's are excellent! sometimes within minutes you can get a response to any question....and all are measured and well researched.

Your concern about thousands being present on the game server is unfounded, yes the server will have possibly a thousand subscribers but only 400 or so will play at any one time. I hope this addresses at least one of your fears....

Yours

AGAMEMNON

There is no Problem with you using the name. My interest in 'Eggs & Bacon' Also goes back many years I have studied her in some depth she was indeed the greatest 64 that ever did sail:)

However my interest is not just limited to the 64 I am currently researching one of her decendents the Battleship that saw action during the first world war which I am going to write a book about:)

Regards
Rear Admiral Rob

PS Agamemnon if you have AoS2 or PB then we always need more people in the SL RN

RAdmiralRob, Sir

Thanks for the reassuring post, most forums can be quite fickle as you are nodoubt aware!!! But i sense on this forum an air of comraderie second to none, which is nice for a change!

AOS2 & PB arrhhh now theres the problem, ive been trawling the web and stores for a copy of either, but with no joy. Perhaps you could steer me in the right direction!

Thanks

Agamemnon

We have a great community here we dont hold with being petty over names (although we do sometimes have a joke or two). i doubt you will find a better community anywhere small but perfect:)

The only rivalry we do have is inter fleet but like the real navies of the time we are all very civilised about it with the exception of....

I have sent you a personal message re AoS2/PB

Run Away!!!!!!
Agamemnon Posted: Jul 30 2003, 06:46 AM
Fear not RAdmiralRob!

Akella are providing the some of ship models only!

The actual game engine is Steam (which is very good)

Sea Witch Posted: Jul 30 2003, 06:47 AM
Well, Akella working with them is no real surprise, is it? They've already done the research on the ships, have the ship models in place, and the like.
VAdmiralRob Posted: Jul 30 2003, 06:52 AM
The only thing is that I though the game was set in 1720 which is about 50 years before AoS2 or is it different ship models they are using?

Sea Witch Posted: Jul 30 2003, 08:01 AM
If you look at the ships in the various mods, there are ships from many different times, actually.

Anyway.....I registered in the forum there as DemonGoddess, as someone ELSE has my normal name, dang it!

And, after doing a bit of reading (and believe me I will be doing lots more), I notice they're only set for 3 national fleets? So, they have a "say hello" thread, and I asked some questions there. We'll see what's said in response.
VAdmiralRob Posted: Jul 30 2003, 08:10 AM
Its always annoying when someone pinches your name I reckon they saw it on here and thought yeh that ias great I will use it:)

So SW will you be the ambassodore for sl in Potbs?
Sea Witch Posted: Jul 30 2003, 08:28 AM
I think what we need is several of us to take a look, actually; and let everyone here know the general tone of things. As I said, I know that Kevin or I will not be playing this game, as it is for broadband players only. I also know we are not the only ones stuck with dialup only.

I'd like to see if this can be worked within general play for those of us with broadband, allowing those of you in fleets, to be able to play a SEA LORDS fleet member; that is, if you'd like that. They talk of affiliation there, but I've yet to see where they've actually organized fleets.
VAdmiralRob Posted: Jul 30 2003, 08:55 AM
I am stuck on dial up at the moment as well, but hopefully it will be interesrting to watch:)

As to the fleets the reason I think they have limited fleets is that there were not that many operating in that area at that time the only other was the dutch i think but i am sure someone will correct me if i am wrong

You wont see fleets being organized yet im afraid, the game isn't at Beta stage! But some of us are already making noises about which fleets and what direction we're going to go in....

The community is already growing fast, it wont be long before groups of posters start thinking about the future plans.

Firstly, It is nice to read your post Agamemnon... Agememmine, ahem, sir. (takes a sip of merlot) Your information is quite interesting and I look forward to more about the game and you and Rob's interest in the great ship.

But to state (understand it to be in this character only) it plainly sir, so that even you Anglaise can understand... they had to rebuild her in steel because how bad the wood leaked.

Nothing personal of course sir... just facts based on intel from the finest of French observers and shipwrights.

Agamemnon,

I'm not quite sure if my fears about the sheer number of players really are unfounded. Yes, as several of you have pointed out, there will only be 400 or a similar number of players on at any one time, however if there are only three actual nations (at least to start with), then a fleet admiral will have to deal with say 6-700 officers (if our assumptions concerning the fleet admiralties are correct.) And although the devs may be able to control names and such, I would like to see a behaviour limitation as well, such as a reporting system in which say a losing officer calls the other side foul names or something of the like, and his reputation could suffer if the accusations are proven.

My problems with number of players in a server are mostly about the relationships we as sea lords and players of AOS2 and PB have maintained. These relations may no longer be kept or developed with 400 members on at a single time. However I hope they are. And I am not opposed at all to giving this game or any other a try.

Capt. Lilnap Spanish Navy

Agamemnon Posted: Jul 30 2003, 11:49 AM Lilnap,

Im unsure where your getting the figure of 6-700 officers from! not everyone who will play on the server will want to play in one of the three National Navies....

For example:

http://www.flyinglab.com/forums/showthread...s=&threadid=992

Please note that there is a very good mix of players professions...

As SeaLords you could keep your special relationship, by forming a squadron or fleet that could meet at a certain time, accept orders from the Admiralty and as a group complete the various tasks assigned to you. I cant see a problem with it really....The other Naval players will hopefully form their own squadrons, completing their own tasks and sometimes cooperating with others Fleets in times of war. In later releases Players can rise through the ranks to Admirals and actually promote players, assign ships and plan naval strategies (which sounds quite exciting).

I think already the developers have put in a huge amount of research, and questions from the likes of us can only help in giving us the players the game we want.

Lilnap, who said we were going to have another 400, 700, 1000, or whatever number of other players joining Sea Lords??? You are worrying about losing control a little too much! The whole idea here is so that we can "participate" with our fellow SL members in another game, not take control of it! And as Sea Witch stated above, we are not limiting ourselves to just one game.

As far as where all of these players will be, you keep forgetting that this is not a "fleet vs fleet" only game. Check out the polls on the PoBS forums. You will have an equal number of people playing as several different types of sailors (some a little more equal than others ).

Privateers
Pirates
Merchants
Smugglers
Dutch Navy
French Navy
British Navy
Spanish Navy

And as far as "behaviour control", I think the Devs have covered that in detail as well. However, you can't control everything. For all the decorum we display here at Sea Lords, even we have had our "nasty spits".

Humbly yours, etc.

I pm'd Rev to see how he and the other developers think we can maybe incorporate this game.

You see Agammemnon, the concern I'm seeing here, is that we don't want to lose our Sea Lords identities (at least that's what it looks like to me). So, the question isn't so much can those of us with broadband play, but will there be a problem if we play as members of a Sea Lords fleet. We ALREADY HAVE established for the last few years a Spanish, British and French navy, as well as OTHER navies.

Because we are structured as quasi-military, we have a definite chain of command, we have officers in place, as well as rank and file players. We have rules of conduct for all players involved in our organization (posted here in the forum and on the site itself).

I'd suggest that you take a look at our different fleet sites, to get a feel for what I'm talking about for the Sea Lords gamers, and what has been mentioned already about our community here being a rather tightly knit bunch.
Agamemnon Posted: Jul 30 2003, 12:11 PM
Seawitch,

I understand your concerns, and I appreciate the level of realism you like to achieve with ranks and chains of command. For your interest, I too was once a member of a similar group of players on-line, who also had a solid chain of command.

Some of you seem to have an air of paranoia about the breaking up of your group, but as Capt Ikerd says you will merely participate in the world as a group.... it really is that simple!

Well after reading more about PoBS on their forums I'd say some of my concerns were already adressed.
There are some very good ideas there. The game soundsgood overall with numerous promised features in future releases. Such as human crewed vessels as opposed to strictly NPC. A more in depth economy, player promotions, larger ships, etc....There seems to be a little too much concern over what your avatar may look like, in my opinion, must be SIMs fans or something The idea of Capt Willy swabbing decks on my ship is appealing though

But developers almost always have a way to make their new game sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread eh? Corned Rat Software certainly did with World War 2 Online...what a nightmare that was at launch..and over 2 years later they are still stuck in France 1940 with no promised Pacific or Eastern front in sight. But that's an extreme example. I hope PoBS learned a lot in how to avoid that.

I do like the idea of being in a squadron with a number of you folks, wouldn't matter to me if it were RN, MF, or SN as I'm pretty sure I would go the Naval route, at least in the beginning.

HAHA, I'm trying to image great sea battles in the beginning conducted with nothing but sloops and the occaisional small frigate... Wars will not be decided upon by Admirals but by the politician in game...hmmm...wonder who they will be?? Could be scarey.

Oh well...I'll wait untill after the launch to see how it's going..that will be the test.

Salut
